Recycling a winner at Michael Hill NZ Open - Saturday, 18 April 2009
The environment was the winner at the Michael Hill New Zealand Open golf tournament at The Hills course in Queenstown last month with a massive 84.8% of all rubbish being recycled.
Darren Burgess, events and production manager for TA Golf, organisers of the tournament, said that the aim was to have 60% of total waste recycled with the remainder going to landfill.
“To say this result has drastically exceeded the event’s expectations is an understatement. Wanaka Wastebusters was the organisation responsible for this amazing outcome that would have the Michael Hill New Zealand Open rate as one of the top recycling achievements in NZ Major Event accomplishments.
“Another interesting angle on the whole recycling process is that 1545 tonnes of food waste material was composted, thus putting a ‘little of the open back to the environment’,” he said.
